So tonight I popped into the Langham in Auckland, which by the way is looking great with it’s new fit out, for the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards finalists announcement for 2010. There were no surprises for the nominees, with Gin Wigmore, Dane Rumble and the Phoenix Foundation taking top spots.

Porsche 918 Hybrid

Quite possibly the most insane hybrid ever conceived, I’ve been following news on the Porsche 918 since it was announced at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. It’s an amazing piece of machinery and hurls it way from 0-60 in a mere 3 seconds. Amazing. What does it cost? $600,000. Not so cool.

A hybrid supercar that rivals pretty much anything on the road until..well you run outta spark…

New Apple Toys!!

The Apple Store in the US went into its familiar offline state before being updated, and this is one of the cool little gadgets added after its return. Sounds like a great way to add a trackpad to a desktop machine, and a whole lot of those cool multi touch features we take for granted on our iPhones and MacBook Pros. Have a good look at the new features here.

Have a read, and grab yourself one! They’ve also updated their LED Cinema Displays with a 27″ 16:9 version and added new i3 iMacs and most of all new Mac Pro with 12 cores. Here’s hoping something happens in the next few days!

Working in the entertainment industry, I’m well used to spending days or even hours setting up for an event that might only last a fraction of that time. It’s quite an interesting thing when you give it a bit of thought. The next time you go to a show, try and absorb what it would have taken the production and tech team to set up everything that you’re going to enjoy for the night.

Anyway, I digress. I came across these amazing 3d street art renditions that will blow your mind. Imagine the amount of time that the artist has put into creating something that is…well…semi permanent at best. Sandcastle like life span. Hmm…

They might looks quite similar from a distance, but when you bite into one, you can quickly tell the difference. This is the case with the plethora of iPad clones that seem to be imminent in the next few months.

This is definitely a case of monkey see, monkey do. The iPod, iMac and iPhone have all seen manufacturers attempt to clone their features or try and one up these product lines. The market is soon to be flooded with devices from Palm, HTC and who knows who else that will tout their proud replica as an “iPad killer”. Most of these manufacturers have already tried their hand at crafting an iPhone killer. We all know how that turned out…

Triple Layer Blu-Ray

Sharp has announced Blu-Ray XL (and seem to be quite pleased with themselves), which takes the Blu-Ray disc capacity all the way through to 100GB (double the existing capacity of 50GB). What does this mean for players/content providers/game developers and consumers? Hopefully a better, richer, more enthralling end user experience. 3D comes to mind – considering that’s the buzz word on everyone’s lips at the moment. Does this mean that we will have to upgrade all our players and consoles? Not sure yet. There isn’t any word just yet. I’m secretly hoping that as consumers this should be as seamless as possible…

Survive a Plane Crash

In a year that I had intended to stay within the beautiful bounds of New Zealand, I find myself having to renew my passport this week for an impending trip to Sydney to close off the month of July. We’re running an MMA event in Sydney, and in addition to the actual event at the Sports Centre in Sydney Olympic Park, we’re also streaming it live to PPV subscribers. This will prove to be an exciting time for all involved and I’m really looking forward to the great fights in store.

My thoughts then moved onto flights and planning my trip so I thought I’d kick into some light reading before I get much further.

I will keep you updated about the actual event, but all I can say at the moment is that its got some of the best Australasian fighters up against the best that the US has to offer. There are great undercard fights leading up to some bigger bouts. Should be a great night!

Lebron chooses…

So after much anticipation, (and an amazing amount of hype), Leron James is moving to South Beach to join the Heat. Winning is obviously a big thing, and is definitely important to the man, so this move is what he thinks will set him up for a ring or two before he gets any further into his um…mid-to-late twenties.

In addition, Wade and Bosh have to take a pay cut so James can join their ranks. I suppose being champions will no doubt increase other revenue streams.

If the Lakers were Pop music, the Celtics would be Indie. at the end of the day, Pop wins the masses and gets the glory. So what tune is gonna hit us in the 2011 playoffs? Will the games from fall 2010 be any indication of things to come in the playoffs? The Cavs did fairly well during the regular season and looked to pose a real threat in the playoffs, but what actually happened was a bit different.

So – another exciting year ahead of us. I can’t wait to see the games in the next little while.

How many times do you catch yourself abandoning a real life conversation to check that text message that just came in, or for us who have one of the vast array of smartphones out there and the luxury of push email, the latest email to populate our inbox?

When I think about it, both my BlackBerry and iPhone have the same ‘best’ and ‘worst’ feature. Push Email.

Atlanta Fall @ York Street

Up and comers Atlanta Fall won themselves some recording time at the prestigious York Street Studios based in Parnell, Auckland. The band has been making steady progress in the Auckland live scene with their catchy pop/rock sound, with infectious hooks and great stage presence. Being an enterprising lot, they released a self funded EP to give their growing fan base something to take home from the show. They entered a Facebook competition put on by York Street for studio time. The votes came in and the rest is history.

Over the last two days, the band has been utilizing their time with Captain Hook (resident York St producer/engineer) tracking their single “Release Your Fears”. I popped in on them to see how things were going, and things were sound good. With the guidance of Hook, the band managed to take their initial rendition of their song and prep it well for commercial airplay success.

I can’t wait to see what comes out of this little project. For the band, this was a great helping hand to get them access to a premier recording facility with top quality producers and engineers providing the right input at the right time. This will definitely fast track them in some shape or form, whether that be NZ On Air funding, offers to make a complimentary music video or online success through their MySpace or Facebook presence. On the flip side, this is a great showcase for York Street to show what can be done with a fairly fresh talent. I’m sure if they do some work post studio, they will be able to get a lot more up and comers coveting some recording time within those fair walls. It’s great to have their in house producers and engineers showcased in such a way and it definitely makes them feel more accessible to the up and coming artists. All going well, I’m sure that Atlanta Fall will now be hooked (no pun intended) to York Street as well. They will definitely want to spend their grant on studio time there.

Ah – exciting times indeed. Let’s see how things pan out!

Problems. We all come across them. Some are more challenging than others. Some seem impossible to solve. Some aren’t actually problems at all. However, one thing remains – the way we approach these problems will stand to determine whether we achieve our desired outcome.

In a busy world, we might not all have time to tackle each situation that comes across our path with the appropriate resources. We have always had 24 hours in a day, yet we seem to always need to extract more from our time. This is why we need to be creative in our approach to our everyday problems.
